I really enjoy using this website to practise my Japanese speaking skills. One of the best things about it is that it offers two free 25-minute conversation sessions with a Japanese teacher. Each session is a one-to-one conversation, so I can practise speaking directly with the teacher in a comfortable and supportive environment. I can also choose any topic I like, which makes the conversation interesting and enjoyable.

Another great feature is that after each session, the teacher corrects my mistakes and explains how to express myself more naturally and accurately in Japanese. This helps me improve my grammar, vocabulary, and everyday conversation skills.

I really appreciate this opportunity to practise speaking Japanese with a native teacher and receive personalised feedback. It’s an excellent way to build confidence and improve my Japanese speaking ability. I highly recommend this website to anyone who wants to improve their Japanese conversation skills!

This event is exactly as advertised – the Zoom call starts out with a few introductory words, then you break off into a smaller one-on-one session with a Japanese instructor.

Having attended multiple sessions, I can say that you get a mixed bag of personalities and level of experience. Some instructors are able to understand and provide support in English, while others can only speak Japanese. Overall, this a good thing, since it exposes you to a wider range of situations to gain experience from.

The one commonality I have found across all instructors are that they are nice, friendly and willing to give it their best.

As icing on the cake, the event is also completely free! It certainly is an excellent experience that I would highly recommend.

I had an excellent experience. I had the chance to speak with Kazuko sensei twice, and I really enjoyed both sessions. She was kind and patient with me, even when I struggled to express myself in Japanese. I’m grateful for her encouragement and the gentle way she corrected my mistakes. Thank you for this opportunity.

OUR PHILOSOPHY 🌱

Japanese Is a Bridge to
People and Possibilities. 🌏

We believe learning and teaching Japanese can open doors to new connections, experiences, and opportunities.

At WakuCamp, we want Japanese learning to be more than memorizing vocabulary and grammar.

We want to help people express their own thoughts, share their experiences, and connect with others through Japanese.

And we want to create a community where Japanese learners and aspiring teachers can learn from one another.

💬

Your Voice Matters

Your interests, experiences, and what you really want to say are the starting points of learning. Japanese should help you express who you are.

🌸

Learning Is Personal

Everyone has different goals. We aim to support learning that connects Japanese expressions to your own life, needs, and experiences.

🤝

We Grow Together

Learners practice speaking. Aspiring teachers practice teaching. Through real conversations, both sides discover, improve, and grow together.

You practice Japanese.
We practice teaching.
We grow together. 🌱

Your participation helps us build a better learning community for everyone.
OUR TEACHING APPROACH 🌸

Your Life Is Our Textbook. 📖

First, what do YOU want to say?

We believe Japanese learning should begin with your real thoughts, interests, experiences, and dreams. Instead of only practicing conversations between imaginary characters, we want to help you express what truly matters to you.

What's the difference?

📚 Textbook-first

Start with the grammar

A textbook introduces a grammar point and gives you an example sentence to practice.

Today's grammar: ~たいです (want to do) すしを食べたいです。 I want to eat sushi.

You learn a useful expression through a prepared example.

💬 Learner-first

Start with YOUR story

We first ask what you want to say. Then we explore the Japanese you need to express your own idea.

What do you want to do in Japan? 富士山に登りたいです! I want to climb Mt. Fuji!

You learn the same grammar through something you genuinely want to communicate.

Textbooks are valuable learning tools. But we don't believe every learner needs to follow exactly the same path in every conversation.

We want to listen to you first, understand your situation, and introduce the vocabulary, grammar, and expressions that help you communicate your own thoughts.

Instead of simply memorizing when an expression is used in an imaginary situation, we want to explore when YOU would use it in your own life.

💛 Your thoughts 💬 Your words 🌸 Your Japanese

We're Learning to Teach This Way, Too! 🌱

This is the learner-centered teaching approach our Japanese participants are studying and practicing.

We're still learning how to listen carefully, respond flexibly, and turn your real-life experiences into meaningful Japanese learning opportunities.

Our goal is to help you express your own thoughts, in your own words, in Japanese.

GROWING TOGETHER 🌱

We Are Learning, Just Like You.

Knowing something and being able to do it are two different things.

You can study Japanese grammar, memorize vocabulary, and understand everything in a textbook.

But when it's time to speak, finding the right words can still be difficult.

Teaching Japanese is the same. Understanding how to teach is not the same as being able to respond to a real learner. That's why we all need opportunities to practice.

💬

You

Practice speaking Japanese

Try using the Japanese you've learned. Share your real thoughts, ask questions, and discover new ways to express yourself. You don't need to be perfect. Every conversation helps you gain experience.

🌸

Our Japanese Participants

Practice teaching Japanese

They are studying how to listen to learners, understand individual needs, and support meaningful communication. Here, they practice responding flexibly to real people and real conversations.

🤝 Why Your Participation Matters

Our Japanese participants cannot learn everything about teaching from books or videos. They need to meet real learners, hear their questions, and discover what kind of support is helpful.

By joining, you give them an opportunity to practice and grow. And in return, they work to help you enjoy speaking Japanese and learn expressions that are useful to you.

Your participation is not just receiving help. You are helping someone become a better teacher.

🌱 We're Still Learning — And We're Giving Our Best

We are studying a learner-centered approach to teaching Japanese. We want to begin with your interests, your experiences, and what you really want to say.

This approach asks teachers to listen carefully and adapt to each learner, rather than simply follow a fixed script. That can be challenging, especially while we're still learning.

Sometimes we may not explain something perfectly or know the best way to respond right away. But we will do our best to make your time enjoyable, meaningful, and valuable to you.

We hope you'll join us with that understanding, and help us learn from the experience together.

Let's Celebrate Each Other's Growth! 🎉

Sometimes you'll struggle to find the right words. Sometimes we'll struggle to find the best explanation. Both are natural parts of learning.

We hope to become more than people who meet for a single practice session. We want to become a community of friends who recognize each other's challenges, notice each other's progress, and celebrate every step forward.

Let's learn, make mistakes, and grow together! 🌸

HOW IT WORKS

💬 Two Conversations, One Hour of Practice

Join us online via Zoom for two conversation sessions of about 25 minutes each. You will have a chance to speak Japanese with different Japanese participants.

1️⃣ Session 1 · About 25 min

Meet your first Japanese conversation partner or small group. Introduce yourself, talk about your interests, and practice at your own pace.

2️⃣ Session 2 · About 25 min

We change the room assignments so you can practice with a different Japanese participant when possible.

🤝 Usually one-on-one: We aim to pair one Japanese learner with one Japanese participant in a Zoom breakout room. If numbers are uneven, some conversations may take place in a small group, sometimes with Masa, the organizer.

Small groups are also a chance to practice joining a discussion, listening, and asking follow-up questions. If you are in a group for the first session, we will try to arrange a one-on-one conversation for the second.
BEGINNERS & SUPPORT

🌱 Beginners Welcome. Your Preferences Matter.

You do not need to speak perfect Japanese—or even be able to hold a full conversation. This is a place to practice before you feel ready. Your Japanese partner will try to help you express what you want to say using the Japanese you know.

New to Japanese and feeling nervous?

After booking, reply to your confirmation email and tell us that you are a beginner. When possible, we will pair you with someone who wants to practice supporting beginners.

✏️ Choose how you want corrections

At the beginning of the conversation, tell your partner whether you want corrections and when you prefer to receive them.

⚡ Right away
Correct me as I speak.
💬 After the topic
Let me finish my thought first.
⏱ During the last 5 minutes
Save feedback until the end.
😊 No corrections
I just want to enjoy the conversation.

You can also share your learning goal or ask for help with a particular expression. There is no single right way to practice.

🌸 Remember: This is practice, so corrections may be part of the session. But in everyday conversations, communication matters more than perfect grammar. Focus on sharing your thoughts and enjoying the connection!
